Heartburn is a burning sensation in your chest, often felt behind your breastbone. It can also spread to your neck and throat. It is caused by stomach acid backing up into your esophagus. Heartburn is a common symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic condition that affects the digestive system. Other symptoms of GERD include:

  • A sour taste in your mouth

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Hoarseness

  • Chronic cough

  • Chest pain

If you experience heartburn frequently, see your doctor to rule out GERD and other conditions.
